From Trainee to Employee

HopeWorks Training Academy 2025 Graduate Experience

At the core of HopeWorks, our social enterprises, and our training programs is the unwavering goal to help people transition from a place of instability, to one of lasting stability. Our recent Culinary Kitchen expansion, that debuted at the Kindred Kitchen Summer Dinner event, is a perfect example of how we are investing in a robust training framework to provide a sturdy foundation for HopeWorks participants.

One of our recent HopeWorks graduates, who has asked to stay anonymous, has found that stability after successfully completing training and is now a full time hire at a local catering and wedding event business! Here’s what they had to say when we met up to chat about their success.

“I would have to say what I’m proud of was getting to learn the hands-on approach behind the scenes at Kindred Kitchen, seeing how they operate and how they function to keep the kitchen going and serving customers…. What stuck with me [upon graduation] is being able to participate behind the scenes of Kindred Kitchen, getting to use various cooking techniques and tools to help get the job done with the potato dicer, tomato slicer, and mandoline…. It was nice making my own croissant sandwiches, using different kitchen tools to chop and dice as well as the larger equipment. Using the automatic dishwasher was awesome— and the meat slicer, if you’re careful!”

The graduate eagerly pinpointed the culinary skills they acquired while completing the

HopeWorks Training Program at Kindred Kitchen. Before HopeWorks, they had recently finished a quarter of college courses and were looking for a program that could teach them “real world experience.” They had difficulty finding work, feeling like no one would give them a chance since they had no experience— until they found our Training Academy.

“[HopeWorks] has helped me a great deal, and I’m very thankful for their assistance and support, plus I wasn’t treated like a nobody.”

Program staff also helps Trainees plan for next steps after graduation.

“They helped me make a well-updated resume and gave me references for proof that I completed training.”

“HopeWorks has unlocked the masterful combination of teaching “real world experience” with creating a safe space for folks to be themselves and connect with others. “I was worried that I was going to be overlooked even if I was present at Kindred Kitchen, but thankfully that didn’t happen…. What changed for me [since completing the program] is not feeling alone and knowing there are helpers out there like you making a difference in the lives of others.”

The Kindred Kitchen graduate ended their reflection by sharing their advice for others:

“My advice would be not to pass up this opportunity. It really helps open doors to create better experiences and a future for people that want to create something unique in their own lives.”

New Curriculum

Behind the scenes, our team has been ensuring our program is as robust as possible for our job training participants in an ever changing job landscape. Our goal is to prepare Trainees for future career success, and that starts with our ground up approach to wholistic career readiness.

New Pathways

We’ve expanded our current pathways and are developing future options for trainees. Exciting improvements with our Culinary Pathway have provided an expanded training environment where a wider range of skills can be developed by Trainees.

New Opportunities

New community partnerships are being developed to allow for additional job placement opportunities, and to create pipelines for hiring post graduation from HopeWorks. Additional services and classes are also being offered directly to Housing Hope residents at various housing communities across Snohomish County, such as financial literacy classes at Madrona Highlands.
