More Than Just Burgers: A Day of Connection at East County

This past Thursday, we hosted what was supposed to be a simple summer barbecue at our East County location. On the surface, it was a typical gathering... the grill fired up with burgers and hot dogs, neighbors stopping by for a bite. But as the afternoon unfolded, it became clear this was something more.

Volunteers assisted with everything from setup to serving food, ensuring the afternoon ran smoothly and that everyone felt welcome. A special thank-you to Chris and Connie for being such a big part of that effort! As people arrived, the courtyard quickly filled with the sounds of laughter and conversation, and the smell of burgers on the grill drifted through the air.

It didn’t take long to realize this wasn’t just about food. It was about connection.

Neighbors who hadn’t spoken before were suddenly swapping stories and favorite burger toppings. Kids ran around without a phone in sight. Adults stood talking in small circles, soaking in the moment. There was even a spontaneous arm-wrestling showdown (which, for the record, I lost many times, but I’m not bitter).

In today’s world, it’s far too easy to stay isolated, even from the people living right next door. But every once in a while, something simple like a community barbecue reminds us of how much we actually share. Whether it’s a love of potato salad, a debate over American vs. cheddar cheese, or just the joy of laughing together, these are the moments that build community.

At Housing Hope, community isn’t just a word. It’s the foundation of everything we do.

Life moves fast, and it can be overwhelming. But when you’re surrounded by good people, neighbors who care, friends who show up, and strangers who become familiar... it makes the journey a whole lot lighter.

Here’s to more moments like these: good food, full hearts, and a strong sense of togetherness.

Warm wishes,
